A Word from the editor...

JessicaThe new year is upon us and what else can we think about but the impending opportunities and challenges that come with a fresh new start in 2008. The nice thing about powersports as an industry is that there's always something going on year round and in all weather; the down side is the general public usually profess a reduction in buying power in January and February, but for businesses the show must go on.

Downtimes are a good opportunity for taking care of little things we figure we'd like to get to if we only had the time. Updating product and PR mailing lists, rethinking marketing plans and developing a strategic plan for the year are business-crucial, but sometimes overlooked, activities that can give you a stronger start for 2008.

Even if customers aren't breaking down the door to make large purchases around this time, they're probably still thinking about them. Now's a good time to stay top of mind with potential buyers by sending a survey, new product introduction or list of clearance / new items to your mailing list so that when they're ready, customers will think of you first.

Of course there's a good possibility you don't have a mailing list or customer base directory to which you send regular sales, industry news and product offerings. What better time to create the infrastructure for implementing this important tool for maintaining a consistent avenue of communication with past and potential customers? Ask new customers if they'd mind receiving printed or emailed company updates and sales material, but don't stop there: if you can, send out Christmas or birthday wishes over email and watch the impression your personal touch makes with customers.

If you're feeling especially ambitious you can get your books in order, clean out your store rooms or prepare for tax time, which never comes at a slow enough pace. Or take a little hiatus yourself; the post-holiday season is a good time to travel, even if for a day or two.

And for those of you who just can't take your mind of off business, this issue of Canadian Powersport Trade features a close look at touring accessories that will surely make an impact on those customers looking to go the distance in style. We also asked top motocross racers for their input into what makes for good off-road gear. If high-speeds and crazy action aren't enough to inspire customers to get on board with top-of-the-line motocross gear, maybe a few words from the pros will do the trick.

We at Canadian Powersport Trade are heading full throttle into the new year with the development of a brand spanking new e-newsletter that will feature news and topics most important to you as well as the latest in new product and industry news. (While you're making that email list, why not add us to it?) Look for our newsletter's launch February 1st.

And finally, never forget this is your magazine and we always welcome your feedback, comments and story suggestions. Thanks a million for your continued support of Canadian Powersport Trade, and we wish you a happy and prosperous new year.
